"What should I expect during my first ANBB massage?"

First, you will be required to fill out a health history form. This allows your ANBB massage therapist to get to know you and assess your current status. ANBB requires your honesty on this form, especially in regards to any medication you are currently taking or have taken in the recent past. After you have completed this form your massage therapist will begin by asking you general questions to establish what areas you would like worked on more than others. Don't hesitate to ask questions about anything which you're unsure of, or any concerns you might have. If you're expecting something in particular from your massage experience, make sure you tell your massage therapist at this time.

For example, if you've been having a lot of stiffness in your neck and can hardly turn your head, this is something your massage therapist needs to know to spend more time on. If you prefer a lighter or deeper massage, make that preference known. Your massage therapist will discover your tight and sore areas during the massage, and will prioritize the time spent on these areas. Letting us know ahead of time about these problem areas lets your massage therapist organize their time more efficiently and effectively.

At this point your massage therapist will ensure they have answered all your questions. Then, they will leave the room and ask you to please undress to your comfort level. Most men undress down to their underwear, most women down to their panties. Once again though, undress to YOUR comfort level!

If you are unable to lie flat on your back or on your stomach without pain, please let us know there are ways we can make you more comfortable during the massage.

"What does ANBB need me to wear during the massage?"

Depending on the primary technique your massage therapist uses, you may or may not need to undress. For a full body customized relaxation massage on the massage table, most disrobe down to their underwear. However, you may choose to wear as much clothing as you feel comfortable with. You will be covered with a sheet and blanket at all times except the area being worked on. This is called Draping. Draping is NOT an option.

If you are visiting ANBB for a CranioSacral Massage session, you may leave your clothes on. It is recommended to wear light or thin clothing during this type of massage.

"What do I do during an ANBB massage therapy session?"

For a relaxing therapeutic massage, make yourself comfortable! If your massage therapist needs you to adjust your position, they will ask to move you or will ask you to move your body or body part that is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a massage session; others prefer to talk. It's up to you. This is YOUR massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Please ask questions at any time!

"What is NOT included in a ANBB massage?"

Sex. Let's get it right out there in the open, and ANBB is going to be a bit blunt about it.

ANBB massage therapists do not offer sex, sexual foreplay, sexual innuendos, or anything sexual; they do not accept sex or anything that is erotic or sexual as well. Our massage session and relationship is one of professional massage therapist and client.

Any implications of sex or erotic behavior will not be tolerated at all.

If you insist on any inappropriate behavior, the ANBB massage therapist will end the session immediately, and you'll be required to pay the full price whether the ANBB massage lasted two minutes or an hour.

"How will an ANBB massage feel?"

This will depend on the techniques utilized to achieve the therapeutic goals you have. Swedish massage, which is often a baseline for practitioners to build upon with your customized treatment plan. In a general swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes (effleurage) that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension.

As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. For your deep tissue massage lovers out there, yes, we do perform a great deep tissue massage, myofascial release, and Trigger Point Massage Therapy. Please understand that whatever techniques we use really shouldn't be the concern; your concern should be relaxing and relief from all your aches and pains!

Often, a light oil or crème is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. Also understand that the base oil/crème has almond oil in it. If you are allergic to this let your ANBB massage therapist know! We have nut free massage oil/crèmes as well. Do not hesitate to ask questions or mention if you feel any discomfort so that I can use another approach or technique to achieve your relaxation goals.

Also keep in mind that if you are visiting ANBB for a deep tissue massage, you may feel some slight to medium pain.

Please understand that even with this we will only press as hard as your body allows, in a relaxed fashion. We are not here to cause you more pain; we are here to get to the root of the problem and work the muscles and fascia and correct your body or posture that is causing you pain!

"Is an ANBB massage always appropriate?"

No. There are several medical conditions that would make a massage inappropriate. That's why it is necessary that you fill out the health history form before you begin your massage session. ANBB massage therapists will ask health questions to rule out if you have any contraindications to massage. It is very important that you inform your massage therapist of any health problems or medications you are taking.

If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage prior to any session. We may require a recommendation or approval from your medical doctor. This can be addressed with us over the phone prior to the massage if you are unsure if a massage is right for you.

We do not perform massage on intoxicated or drunk people either. If you've been drinking, schedule your massage with us for another day.

"How will I feel after the massage therapy treatment?"

Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling calm, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days.

Once again, please understand that if you are visiting us for a deep tissue massage, myofascial or trigger point therapy massage your muscles may still feel sore. This is Ok. We must realize that it takes time for the body to heal itself! Understand that we perform treatment, the body heals itself. Treatment is from the outside, healing comes from within.

"Will my massage hurt?"

That depends on the type of massage and the depth of the strokes. A light massage that doesn't probe very deep into muscles shouldn't hurt. At the same time, the light massage won't be able to work out any stress that's deep within those muscles. A muscle that is relaxed will be supple and soft and won't hurt when rubbed. Muscles that are tight, and in many cases have been chronically tight for a long time, may have that 'good hurt' feeling with a deeper ANBB massage.

Think of that 'good hurt' as the feeling you get when you stretch a sore muscle during exercise or a yawn. Muscles can be very sore from overuse or tightness, and that good hurt can become painful. A sharp pain may indicate a muscle that has been injured and has some sort of inflammation. In this case, you don't want the deep work to continue in this area. A deep tissue massage with tight muscles may leave some residual soreness the next day.

You also must realize that every-body has different thresholds of pain. The depth of a stroke may not be deep enough for one person's liking and may cause pain for another.

Some people want the massage as deep as possible regardless of the soreness. Others want something much lighter, more to help them relax rather than deeper work that might be sore. So make your preference known to me, and give feedback at any time during the massage that the depth of the strokes are more to your comfort level.

"What if I'm overweight or embarrassed about my body?"

You wouldn't believe how many times ANBB massage therapist has heard someone say they'd get a massage if they lost weight first or didn't have that cellulite on the back of their thighs. Don't let this stop you! You are denying yourself quite a pleasurable experience! (As well as a healthy alternative to reducing tension and stress.)

ANBB massage therapists have seen bodies in every imaginable shape and size, from young to old, and we are not here trying to judge your physique or ogle your body. ANBB massage therapists are professionals who have found massage to be a wonderful gift to give to men and women alike, regardless of age and weight, and is proud of what massage can offer to YOU, regardless if you are in need of help or just wanting to enjoy the luxury in the sense of touch.

"How often should I receive a ANBB massage?"

The answer depends on the reasons for receiving a massage. If you have contacted ANBB for some injury relief, and to relieve chronic tightness that is interfering with your daily life in some way, weekly sessions may be necessary for a while to build on each massage session's improvement in your relief and healing.

If you are using massage for preventive care and managing the daily stress in your life, once a month is about the norm. You may shorten the time between massage sessions during stressful periods. Some clients come more often just because they enjoy it so much!

For most people, the frequency of the massage they receive is limited by their pocketbook. It's an unfortunate fact, but once many people realize the benefits it provides them, and the pleasure they receive from it, they find a way to incorporate a regular massage session into their budget.

The key to all of this is in our priorities. Is our health and wellness a priority for us? Do we want to feel good all of the time or continue to go to work all stressed out, or, in constant pain?

Here’s how cupping works.

As we age, especially after 40 years old, our body begins to break down. This includes loss of muscle, adhesions in fascia and decrease in blood flow. You can see this as your muscle tone decreases, we get stiffer and wrinkles start to appear in new places. As we move less and decrease our physical activity the blood supply to tissues decrease and the fascia gets knotted and scarred up further limiting movement and becoming a vicious cycle, or a chronic problem.
Putting cups over a region helps the body reverse some of these effects. Initially it pulls blood into an area. The tissues get saturated with fresh blood while the vacuum pulls stagnant blood out of the area. You can see this in the hickey like appearance (not a bruise) that is typically left behind. You may have a black and blue appearance that is rarely painful. There are a couple characteristics about this phenomenon. One is that it happens more in people over 40 and two the more cupping you receive the less the bruising happens.
As new blood is forced into the tissues around the cups the body will begin to develop new blood vessels called neovascularization, or the easier version, new blood vessel formation. This is why cupping can cause a lasting effect. As the new vessels form they will have the capability to feed the tissues with nutrients and oxygen. Like all living things, all tissues need food and oxygen to survive.
Something else happens early in this process as well. It is called sterile inflammation. Now many hear the word inflammation and think it is a bad thing, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Inflammation is the first line of healing. When the vacuum occurs it causes separation of the different layers of tissue which can cause micro trauma and tearing. . The body then releases healing chemicals to promote and stimulate healing. The inflammation is not chronic nor is it bad.
Next the fascia and tissue can be stretched several feet with cupping. The micro trauma is occurring, the new blood vessels are being formed and the blood and nutrients are starting to flow to the damaged tissue. But when you put 10 or so cups on the back or around the injured area it can begin to stretch the connective tissue and fascia for better movement. Many tell me that cupping works faster and last longer for them than massage. It’s amazing to see the connective tissue stretch this much. Many people start out very tight but over time they can confirm what I see when doing this to people that the tissue is getting looser.
Cupping works very well when used in conjunction with acupuncture and massage. While these other techniques address different tissues and functions of the body, no painful condition or injury exists without other tissue being involved.
Cupping can help you overcome an old or new injury by:
- Increasing circulation
- Increasing oxygenation and tissue delivery
- Removing old stagnant blood
- Causing micro trauma and beneficial inflammation
- Creating new blood vessels
- Stretching fascia and connective tissue.
Cupping is helpful when used in conjunction with massage and acupuncture. Cupping, like many holistic techniques works at different rates for different people.

CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR CUPPING Cupping is contraindicated in cases of severe diseases, i.e. cardiac failure, renal failure, ascites due to hepato-cirrhosis and severe edema, as well as hemorrhagic diseases such as allergic pupura, hemophilia and leukemia, and clients with dermatitis, destruction of skin, or allergic dermatitis. Cupping should not be applied on the portion where hernia exists or has occurred in the past. For pregnant women, the lower abdomen, medial leg and lumbosacral region should be avoided.
